Even though Pedro Almodóvar was a major creative force in blowing away the severity of the Franco years, his films – like “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” – still caused shock-horror in the Spanish heartland. “Second Skin”, though by another director (Gerardo Vera), will almost certainly do likewise. Like Almodóvar, Gerardo Vera kicks aside the Catholic certainties of conservative Spain as he delineates the instability of a marriage, specifically caused by a husband who is torn between his wife and another man.
However, in a more general sense Vera seems to be pointing to what happens when a couple follows two different agendas, of which a gay relationship is only an extreme example. This is a film where the characters embrace desire, anxiety, insecurity, confusion and, finally, a small sign of hope, with the latter not couched in some cute ending.
Elena (Ariadna Gil) and Alberto (Jordi Molla) seem to be in a nice contented groove (she even seems happy when discussing their daily routine), and they have a pleasant flat and a kindly kid to prove it. She discovers hotel receipts in his suit, then declarations of love on his voicemail, and so family life begins to shake.
All three leads move convincingly from confidence through emotional agony to grappling with new lives, even though Elena is much too understanding on hearing the bad news. Still, the basic situation is nothing if not authentic, even if the screenplay moves forward in ordinary, obvious ways. It does, for example, highlight the symbolism of the colour red. The trick, of course, is to be able to include surprise within the bounds of credibility. Nonetheless, the low-key direction is pleasingly emphatic in this properly intense, claustrophobic tale of obsessive love.

Treasure Island is an experimental, 16 mm black-and-white drama written, directed, and photographed by producer Scott King. The loosely constructed plot shows the private lives of two British code-crackers (Lance Baker and Nick Offerman) during WWII who decode letters and look for hidden meanings behind the words. As a counterintelligence ploy, they decide to drop a dead body off the coast of Japan before a discovered invasion. The film then turns to these men’s personal lives and the problems with the women they love, along with the secrets they hide. Frank is married to two women yet is pursing a third, while Samuel and his wife Penny are in a ménage à trois. As the pressures of their lives begin to eat away at them, the dead body starts to enter Frank and Samuel’s subconscious, interacting with the private stories of their lives. He escapes to the city where he tries to be accepted as a woman with tragic results. While working as a hairdresser, he meets Bibi, the trans woman who works at the cabaret and José Maria goes to work with her. In the show, he is not José Maria anymore, but Maria José. At the cabaret, he falls in love with Durán, the owner of the bar. Durán, reluctant at the beginning, nevertheless starts a relationship with Maria José, who wants to go all the way, and plans to travel to London to have a sex change operation.

For whatever reason, this low-budget shot-on-DV film seems to have never been released in any format and is very rare. This is a web rip and the best (and only) print of the film currently available. Inspired by the gay German cannibalism case involving Armin Meiwes (whose story inspired no less than three other films, including Martin Weisz’s Grimm Love (2006) and Marian Dora’s Cannibal (2006) and Ulli Lommel’s Diary of a Cannibal), von Praunheim’s film caused much controversy, mainly because it was partially funded by German tax money. Indeed, somewhat surprisingly, a film foundation in one of Germany’s wealthiest federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia, gave von Praunheim its blessing, and a €20,000 (£13,000) grant. The film is notable for featuring only two actors, who also play all the female characters in drag (with the lead actor also portraying his character’s mother!). Part melodramatic chamber piece and part kitschy campy psycho-horror, Dein Herz in meinem Hirn AKA Your Heart in My Brain (2005) is undoubtedly one strange little film.
Synopsis: A retelling of the events that led to the death of Bernd Juergen Brandes. Brandes responded to Armin Meiwes’ Internet ad in 2001, where Meiwes indicated that he was looking for a man willing to be killed and eaten.

The delightfully impish outrageousness of Rosa von Praunheim turns to more serious contemplation of his origins in the German helmer’s engrossing family docu, “Two Mothers.” Told in 2000 by his 94-year-old mother that he was adopted at an orphanage in Riga, von Praunheim sets out to track down his natural parents. Though such journeys are hardly new, the helmer’s fearless honesty and WWII backdrop make for compelling viewing. Born Holger Radtke in 1942, adopted as Holger Mischwitzky, von Praunheim approaches his search with conflicted emotions, since the parents who raised him provided the kind of loving, supportive home an enfant terrible filmmaker needs to survive. Following mother Gertrud’s death, he begins ferreting out details of the Nazi occupation of Latvia, discovering by pure chance his biological mother’s name, Edith Radtke, and his own birth certificate in a prison hospital. Von Praunheim is unafraid to head down paths others would want hidden, such as the horrific legacy of the SS, and while questions remain by the end, this moving docu is the perfect counterpart to his campier “Phooey, Rosa!”

A wordless film, save for a voice-over introducing us to the imagery of dreams. A shirtless young man dreams of awakening to finds photographs of a muscular sailor carrying him in his arms. He goes to a bar where the sailor from his dream displays his muscular upper torso. A gang of sailors, swinging chains, enters menacingly. He watches, smoking. They surround him and an assault begins. Surreal touches accent the dream-like qualities. A phallic firework, a flaming Christmas tree, and the burning photographs provide climax and closure as the young man, back in bed, is beside the sailor.
He filmed this in his home in Los Angeles during a weekend when his parents were absent, helped by some friendly sailors and a very young bodybuilder.
