Michael Apted – The Triple Echo (1972)

Quote:
An adaptation of an HE Bates story, set in an isolated Wiltshire farm in 1942. With her husband a prisoner-of-war, lonely wife (Jackson) strikes up an intimate relationship with a young soldier (Deacon), a farmer’s boy who hates the army. When he impulsively deserts, she hides him, disguised in drag as her sister. The inevitable tensions of their life are increased when two soldiers from the nearby camp discover ‘the girls’, and the lecherous sergeant (Reed) takes a fancy to the one in drag. The relationship between the wife and the deserter is built carefully and convincingly, but in going for laughs as the bullish sergeant, Oliver Reed lets some of the potential tension slip away. As with many of Bates’ stories, the plot is in any case resolved suddenly and melodramatically.

Quote:
From the panoramic, historical revue of the many faces of social prejudice and ostracism, Ottinger turns her attention to the mechanism of exclusion invested with the necessary power to make or break people. Frau Dr. Mabuse, whose illustrious precursor is Fritz Lang’s psychopathic, counterfeiting boss of the underworld, derives her power from the fabrication of reality based on the seduction of images and words. Her perfect object and victim is the Bauhaus-dandy Dorian, whose relation to Oscar Wilde’s prototype is as marginal as his relation to power. The fairy-tale framework of Ottinger’s feature compositions asserts itself strongly in this film as Dorian replaces the evil tycoon and becomes king of the media conglomerate.

Gregg Araki – Totally F***ed Up (1993)

Quote:
Six queer teenagers struggle to get along with each other and with life in the face of varying obstacles.

Fernando F. Croce wrote:
Gregg Araki once described Totally F***ed Up, his follow-up to the 1992 New Queer Cinema staple The Living End, as a “rag-tag story of fag-and-dyke teen underground…a kind of cross between avant-garde experimental cinema and a queer John Hughes flick.” The statement attests not only to Araki’s committed radicalism, but also to his sense of how the politics of pop culture play to alienated youth. He probably loved a rave from a San Francisco paper hailing the film as “a ‘90s version of The Breakfast Club.”

Araki’s Brat Packers, far ruder and more vociferous than Hughes’s, are a rainbow batch of teens muddling through the triple-whammy of adolescence, boredom, and uncloseted homosexuality in an unmellowed Los Angeles. Actually, queer sex is never a problem; rather, it’s the emotional cargo and the homophobic assholes the young characters have to deal with on a regular basis that lead main brooder Andy (James Duval) to conclude that suicide might not be a bad idea after all. Others orbiting around the film’s deliberately deadbeat Beverly Hills, 90210 scenario include aspiring filmmaker Steven (Gilbert Luna) and his boyfriend Deric (Lance May), sexed-up Tommy (Roko Belic), and acidic dyke couple Michele (Susan Behshid) and Patricia (Jenee Gill), all dealing with their personal ecstasies and miseries.

Godard has always been among Araki’s biggest influences, and, indeed, Totally F***ed Up has been called his Masculin Féminin. Vivre Sa Vie is also evoked via the film’s segmented structure, yet the biggest stylistic shadow here may be Katzelmacher, during which Rainer Werner Fassbinder similarly propped a batch of young outsiders against the wall of society and watched the resulting wreckage. The characters try to flee into their own self-contained universes, complete with self-contained slang (jacking off to Randy becomes “shooting tadpoles at the moon”), but the world is always breaking in, inevitably in the form of emotional pain. Randy’s tentative romance with a potential Mr. Right (Alan Boyce) provides the film not only with the closest it has to a narrative, but also with Araki’s sense (also shared with Fassbinder) that coming to terms with your sexuality doesn’t necessarily shield you from the agonies that often come with relationships. After all, this is a film where a bootleg Nine Inch Nails video is reason enough to betray another person’s affections.

“Life is shit,” Andy says in one of his sunniest moments, but the nihilism is never Araki’s. In fact, for all the mumbled rants about AIDS and shitty relationships, much of Totally F***ed Up’s tone is spiky in its compassion and humor, due in no small amount to Behshid and Gill’s funny lesbian duo. The total lack of pity and condescension carries the film over its rough spots and aimless patches. The endings of Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy (of which Totally F***ed Up is the first part) may seem utterly desolating, yet they all move toward a rejection of negativism in favor of the harsh but inescapable complexities of the world. Life is fucked up, the filmmaker is saying, but it’s worth living.

Quote:
In cinematic enfant terrible Jean-Claude Brisseau’s latest outing, “A l’aventure,” the explicit eroticism of his recent oeuvre topples over into outright porn — not because of graphic sex scenes, but rather due to a plot of unalloyed ludicrousness. Granted, levitating 14th-century Flemish nuns rep an inventive step up from randy milkmen, but Brisseau’s humorless intellectual pretentions founder in very shallow waters. Skedded for an April 1 release in France, pic was pre-bought by IFC Stateside, where its Playboy-ish presentation of elegantly writhing naked women brought to ultimate orgasm, combined with disquisitions on the more cosmological Big Bang Theory, might attract horny eggheads.

Sandrine (Carole Brana), inspired by a cabbie/physicist’s park-bench lamentation over modern man’s soulless conformity, leaves her sexually deadbeat b.f. and mentally unfulfilling job. A cafe pickup leads her to a castle where a hypnotizing shrink, his ex-girlfriend, a whip-wielding, Rasputinesque “master” and the latter’s g.f. explore delights of light S&M. The master soon drops out, leaving the hunky psychiatrist to “hands-on” research in assorted three-on-ones, including a throwback to the medieval combo of religious and carnal ecstasy. Whatever happened to the joy of sex?

Nicholas has long known he is different, that there is something shameful and unacceptable in him that must stay hidden, denied even. But South Africa’s minority government are embroiled in conflict at the Angolian border and all white young men over 16 must serve two years of compulsory military service to defend the Apartheid regime and its culture of toxic racist machismo. The ‘black danger’ is the real and present threat; what is wrong with Nicholas and others like him can be rooted out, treated and cured like a cancer. But just when fear pushes Nicholas to accept unspeakable horrors in the hopes of staying invisible, a tender relationship with another recruit becomes as dangerous for them both as any enemy fire.

Quote:
Of all the new crop of films by new German directors, this first film by Peter Fleischmann has attracted the most attention, and is based upon a prizewinning play by 25-year-old Martin Sperr. Hunting Scenes from Bavaria is a contemporary political play, which, in its broadest viewpoint, is an examination of the social order and its morals. It is set in Lower Bavaria, not because that particular locale is the source of the actions taking place in the film, but because the overall pattern of behavior in German village life was the best way to illustrate a certain sociological process: the hunting or persecution of human beings who, because of certain peculiarities, are living outside of the social order. The subject of aggression is at the center of Fleischmann’s film, and it is fascinating and horrifying to watch the interchangeability of victims in this story of inbred vindictiveness among the villagers of Unholzing. In this idyllic-seeming place, everyone knows and depends upon on everyone else, and in such a closed community, a defect becomes an evil—a mistake, a sin. When Abram, a young mechanic returns to the village after having lived and worked in the city, it is soon learned that he has served a jail term for sexual inversion. This information sets everything into motion.

Jack Smith – Flaming Creatures (1963)

Part of the New American Cinema group in New York City during the 60s, Jack Smith’s flamboyant aesthetic can be characterized by a mix of baroque exoticism, gaudy costumes, and detritus salvaged from the city streets. Flaming Creatures is a non-narrative, Dionysian orgy, complete with wild dancing, gender bending, and a climactic earthquake. The carnivalesque madness of the film is reinforced by the chaotic density of its formal composition. Smith’s deliberate spatial disorientation creates a pansexual landscape of tangled body parts; just as the viewer is unable to situate the visual coordinates of the image, the creatures are unaware of which extremity belongs to whom.

Jean Genet – Un chant d’amour (1950)

From Amos Vogel’s Film as a Subversive Art:
Genet’s only film — hounded by the censors, unavailable, secret — is an early and remarkably moving attempt to portray homosexual passions. Already a classic, it succeeds as perhaps no other film to intimate the explosive power of frustrated sex; male prisoners in solitary confinement “embracing” walls, ramming them in erotic despair with erect penis, swaying convulsively to auto-erotic lust, kissing their own bodies and tattoos in sexual frenzy. In a supremely poetic (and visual) metaphor of sexual deprivation, two prisoners in adjoining cells symbolically perform fellatio by alternately blowing or inhaling each other’s cigarette smoke through a straw inserted in a wall opening, while masturbating. Like all of Genet’s early work, the entire film is, in effect, a single onanistic fantasy, filled with desperate frustration and sensuous nostalgia. In the end, and after many failures, some flowers — painfully passed from one barred window to the next — are finally caught by the prisoner in the adjoining cell in a poetic affirmation of love in infinite imprisonment.

Paul Morrissey – Trash AKA Andy Warhol’s Trash (1970)

From Amos Vogel’s Film as a Subversive Art:
A high-camp “love story” of an outrageously handsome heroin junkie and his trash-scavenging girlfriend (played by a female impersonator), this film skips from fellatio to seduction to foot fetishism in its attacks on soap opera myths and Hollywood. A playful perversity, an acceptance of the soft underbelly of bourgeois society, a strange poignancy informs this fable of impotence, drugs, and sex. In the climactic love scene, the hero — remaining impotent — suggests to the lusting “girl” — reclining on a rumpled bed among objects gathered from garbage cans — that she use a beer bottle instead; she does, while he solicitously inquires whether she is coming, then holds her hand and promises to do better next time. In a second scene, she accuses him, in rage, of not even letting her “suck” him off. What with an antiwar Welfare worker revealed as a malignant foot fetishist, assorted females as sexual aggressors against the forever innocent male, drug-fixes or penises casually displayed, the mounting intrusions upon the viewers’ value system mark this as a truly seditious work.

Kuba Czekaj – Baby Bump (2015)

Quote:
If Walt Disney, Todd Solondz, and David Lynch were to collaborate on a film, it might resemble Kuba Czekaj’s Baby Bump, a gruesome coming-of-age story that is never afraid to test the limits of cinema. Completely disregarded traditional filmmaking rules, the film finds its deranged cast interacting with its sarcastic quasi-narrator for a unique result.

It takes around ten minutes for Baby Bump to venture into immensely inappropriate territory, as a pre-teen girl offers to show a boy her “tits” in exchange for some marshmallows. The film only gets weirder and wilder from there, with Mickey House (Kacper Olszewski) trying and failing to grow up without horribly embarrassing himself. There isn’t much of a narrative. Instead, Baby Bump is comprised of a collection of somewhat intertwining scenes dealing with adolescence, body image, sexual identity, and mental health.

Dealing with taboo subjects like incest and suicide, Czekaj is a bold filmmaker who seems most comfortable in the most traditionally uncomfortable places. Chronicling Mickey’s transition into puberty, the film features disgusting sequences where public hair is used as dental floss, zits are popped onto faces, and erections are caused by something wildly inappropriate. That’s only the tip of the iceberg in regards to Baby Bump‘s vulgar nature. It’s very, very, very grim.

The film is quite humorous at times, but it’s mostly just bizarre. While there’s something darkly comedic about a young boy fearing that his penis is going to fall off, seeing the act occur over and over is nothing short of unsettling. As the film progresses, Mickey continues to fear for the safety of his manhood, which prompts him to imagine it being obliterated in increasingly gruesome ways. It reaches a peak of strangeness when the boy begins to grow unnatural body parts, and daydreams about creative ways of getting rid of them.

Baby Bump should be required viewing for anyone who appreciates weird, boundary-pushing cinema, as it’s one of the most daring and original films of the decade. In an era when sexuality seems especially topical, this film absolutely demands to be seen—just make sure you have a high tolerance for obscenity. If there’s anything in the world that triggers you, Baby Bump is sure to push the button.

Synopsis:
‘The film begins with a school teacher played by Javier Escriva bidding farewell to his students, who are leaving for the summer. As he is heading home he notices two of his students are hitch-hiking (a boy and a girl, played by John Moulder-Brown and Inma de Santis), and picks them up. He invites them over for dinner and lodging, which they accept. The majority of the film from this point on is set at the mansion, where the two students turn from guests to prisoners under the teacher’s command. The teacher has a thuggish (yet sensitive) henchman played by Simon Andreu, who enforces the teacher’s wishes. The teacher begins to sexually humiliate and torture the two students until he has mentally brainwashed them into his way of thinking […] Eventually there is a reversal of roles…’

IMDB:
This is not only the best dutch movie that I have ever seen, but one of the most moving movies that I have ever seen. Great picture of dutch society, on extraordinarily interesting people, full of great humor and sadness, and most importantly on life and death (parallel to the last two). This film is FULL in every way that a film should and can be. It is the heart-filling and heart-wrenching story of one of the most extraordinarily human lives (beautifully acted) ever put on film. It is about Simon, his fast life, his loved ones, and his chosen death. It is also about the truly free society, where all can choose their life and their death for themselves. It is a portrait of a culture of personal responsibility, love, and life that is so needed everywhere. It will make you think, laugh and cry. When and if you can, see this picture, you won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the greats.

Jochen Hick – Mein wunderbares West-Berlin AKA My Wonderful West Berlin (2017)

Berlin-based filmmaker Jochen Hick explores the long shadow left by Paragraph 175 in his fascinating documentary My Wonderful West Berlin (Mein Wunderbares West-Berlin)…
“Many victims died before the rehabilitation process started,” Hicks notes. “That is a very sad feeling, that Germany waited until most of them had passed away.”
Drawing on rare archival footage predominantly focusing on West Berlin’s gay male community from the 50s until the late 80s, the film illuminates a vibrant socio-political network that thrived despite police and political harassment. https://www.sbs.com.au/topics/sexuality/mardigras/article/2018/02/22/subverting-paragraph-175-queer-life-my-wonderful-west-berlin

In West Berlin in the 1960s it was possible to find bars where men could be left to themselves – a fact that was to turn the city into a magnet for young gay men. The protagonists of this film, all still active members of the community today, recall those early years in the city. Theirs are memories of a community that fought steadily for its existence, and of its change, right up to the fall of the Wall. Faced with considerable social repression in the 1970s, a collective gay identity began to emerge, and the ‘West Berlin homosexual campaign’ called for the abolition of paragraph 175 and the overthrow of patriarchy. Ruined buildings become the venues for new ways of living together such as all-male communes or the ‘queer house’. Cottaging, East-West affairs, leather bars, drag performances in the subway – an anarchic kind of joy outshines past suffering. A decade later, AIDS was to hit Berlin. After Out in Ost-Berlin (Out In East Berlin) Jochen Hick explores queer lifestyles in the West of the city and the roots of a fascination that the metropolis still holds as a refuge – and not just for gay men. A fascinating journey through time featuring previously unpublished archive material. https://www.berlinale.de/en/archiv/jahresarchive/2017/02_programm_2017/02_Filmdatenblatt_2017_201710598.html#tab=filmStills

Quote:
A struggling actress forges an unusual family unit with two separate boyfriends in this romantic comedy from indie auteur Gregg Araki. Veronica (Kathleen Robertson) hasn’t had a decent date for a year, but one Halloween she meets not one but two perfect guys: Zed (Matt Keeslar), a rock drummer who does her on the floor of a club bathroom after his show, and Abel (Johnathon Schaech), an affable rock critic and would-be novelist, who seems more interested in connecting with her soul than her private parts. Unable to lie to either guy about her attraction to both of them, Veronica soon convinces them to share her. Eventually, the unemployed Zed and the underemployed Abel even move in with her, resulting in kinky sex and domestic bliss. Trouble comes calling, however, in the form of an unplanned pregnancy — and in the person of Ernest (Eric Mabius), an aptly named TV director, who gives Veronica her big break and the chance to play house and raise her child in a monied, more normal environment. Its soundtrack filled with the director’s trademarked mixture of shoegazer drone and electronic bliss, Splendor premiered at Sundance in 1999. Araki’s first outing after the completion of his “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy,” the film reunited him with two actors who had appeared in that series: Schaech (The Doom Generation) and Robertson (Nowhere). Both of those earlier characters participated in unorthodox romantic tableaux similar to the one documented in Splendor. Robertson, in fact, would return to the world of the ménage à trois with 2002’s XX/XY. Offscreen, the actress raised eyebrows after beginning a romance with her openly gay director.
